In Loving Memory ~
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother Ruth Cecilia Depew.
Ruth leaves behind three children: Brittany Benjestorf, Nicole Angen (Joel), and Alex Benjestorf (Sahresa King), as well as eight beloved grandchildren, and a loving partner Brian Ralph. Ruth was the youngest daughter to John and Joyce Depew, and little sister to Harry Depew and Janice Johnston.
Ruth lived her entire life in Campbell River and built an endearing community. She attended school in Campbell River, as well as Queen Margaret's (Duncan) and Brentwood Bay boarding school(Mill Bay) before following her interest in recreation at Camosun College. Ruth worked for the Regional Strathcona District for 37 years as a lifeguard and aquatic coordinator, as well as National Trainer for the Life Saving Society before retiring January 2022.
In her work she was passionate about education, water safety, and first aid. Ruth's hobbies included boating, mountain biking, swimming, paddle boarding, and all types of shenanigans with friends. She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren at the family cabin on Cortes Island.
Her grandchildren were her favourite focal point, and she would drop any task to spend time with them.
Ruthie made many dear friends in the community and was often racing off to meet them for coffee, lunch dates, or some fun biking adventure. Ruth radiated joy, was quick to laugh, and had an endless playful spirit.
She will be deeply missed by her family, who she cherished and centered her life around, as well as all her friends and many connections.
Her celebration of life will be held on the 2nd of March 2024 from 2:30 - 4:30 pm at the Discovery Coast Inn. Please come prepared to share a funny memory, or something you gained from your experience with Ruth. Coffee, tea, and treats will be provided.
