Karen Joanne Selda Lawrence (Ponka) passed away on December 29th, 2023, at 70, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born January 12th, 1953, in Fort William, Ontario, to Edna Ponka (Champagne).
Karen was a devoted mother to her daughters, Jennifer and Tammy. Following Tammy's birth in Fort William, the family moved to Winnipeg, Victoria then Gold River in 1973. In 1984 the family settled in Campbell River, where she lived for more than 40 years.
Left to mourn her are daughter Jennifer, husband Glen, granddaughters Mercedes (Nick), Madisson, and great-grandchildren Luca, Milana, and Ethan, Grandsons Wyatt, Gabe (Mike). Predeceased by her daughter Tammy.
An animal lover and skilled baker, Karen's green thumb flourished in her garden. Raised on the family homestead in South Gillies, Ontario, then Thunder Bay she cherished her Finnish heritage, and family farm passed down generations reaching a century this year.
A seasoned traveler, Karen explored the world, with Singapore holding a special place in her heart.
Survived by siblings Joanne Forbes, Diane Champagne, Barbara Wells, Robert Champagne, Gary Champagne, and Angella Walls, she shared a special bond with sister Joanne and sister-in-law Mary from Tucson, AZ.
Close friends, Peter Amore and Kat Lohr, will deeply miss her.
She also held a special place in her heart for Willy and Joanne Hart, her long-time neighbors.
A graveside service to celebrate Karen's life will be held on January 12th at noon, at Elk Falls Cemetery, Campbell River.
Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Morrison, Dr. Proctor, Rebecca, Faith, and the staff at Campbell River Hospital for their unwavering support.
Karen's strength and resilience, encapsulated by the Finnish word "Sisu," will be remembered. Joyously reunited in heaven by Tammy, Aiti, and many other loved ones.
