For many of us, filling winter months with friends, family and plenty of holiday cheer plays a big part in keeping the winter blues at bay. For seniors facing health barriers that make getting out during the holidays a challenge, our stormy West Coast winter can become an isolating and lonely time.
It’s one reason why a vibrant seniors residence can be an ideal solution.
For many residents at Campbell River’s Berwick by the Sea, for example, moving into their own private suite in this active, welcoming community offers a reprieve from the isolation and loneliness of winter. They enjoy a wealth of seasonal activities and plenty of opportunities to connect with each other and their community.
“Our event calendars are always busy but they get especially full over the holiday months, with residents and staff enjoying a variety of community celebrations as well as our own in-house events and themed activities,” says Community Relations Manager Loren Butler.
This year residents kicked off the holiday season with a special fundraiser for local food banks and while their ‘Gift in a jar’ fundraiser just recently wrapped up, the seasonal fun at Berwick has only just begun!
The Berwick van was decked out in festive lights and decorations earlier this month as residents participated in the Campbell River Big Truck Parade.
Berwick by the Sea also has a beautifully decorated ‘Berwick Tree’ in the ‘Christmas forest,’ on display as part of the Campbell River Museum’s annual Festival of Trees until the first week of January.
“Along with participating in these wonderful community celebrations, our residents also look forward to a wealth of special in-house celebrations that provide the perfect opportunities for them to connect with one another and with our staff members as well,” Butler says.
Residents celebrate in style while taking in all of their favourite holiday movies in their own private, on-site cinema, where they also host their trivia nights! Along with the cinema, Berwick by the Sea also features the Tyee lounge and Fireside lounge where a majority of their other activities are held.
Along with movies and trivia games, residents also tap into their inner artist, with festive themed events like their holiday cookie decorating day, Christmas wreath decorating day, and of course a fun Christmas sweater day, just to name a few!
“It’s important to us that all of our residents feel like they’re truly ‘home for the holidays,’” Butler says. “Creating a warm, welcoming, festive atmosphere at Berwick by the Sea over the holidays has a big impact when it comes to combating the winter blues and making sure everyone enjoys the season.”
